Flights from the UK
Rome is one of the easiest Italian football destinations to reach from the UK, with direct flights available from London, Manchester, Birmingham and several other UK airports. Most flights arrive at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), with flight times generally around 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours. Rome also has Ciampino Airport (CIA), which is used by some low-cost airlines.

If you’re planning a football weekend in Rome, allow plenty of time to reach the stadium. Stadio Olimpico is around 6 km from Roma Termini, and matchday traffic can make the journey slower. Public transport is generally the easiest option.
Getting to Stadio Olimpico
Stadio Olimpico is located in the Foro Italico complex in northern Rome. From Roma Termini, take Metro Line A towards Battistini and get off at Ottaviano. From there, take bus 32 towards Piazzale della Farnesina, which is a short walk from the stadium. Alternatively, take Metro Line A to Flaminio and continue by tram Line 2 to Piazza Mancini, followed by a short walk across the River Tiber.
Important: there isn’t a metro station directly at Stadio Olimpico, so allow extra time for the final part of the journey. On matchdays, buses can become very busy close to kick-off.

For the full matchday experience, head towards Ponte Milvio before making your way to Stadio Olimpico. It has plenty of bars and restaurants and gives you a good place to soak up the atmosphere before kick-off.

Rome is famous for its traditional food, so a football trip is a great opportunity to try local favourites such as carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, supplì and Roman-style pizza. Around Stadio Olimpico, Ponte Milvio and the nearby Prati area, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, pizzerias, cafés and bars.
For a quick pre-match bite, supplì and pizza al taglio are excellent choices. Supplì are fried rice and mozzarella croquettes and are one of Rome’s classic street foods.

For a football weekend, Prati, Flaminio and the city centre are good options, with plenty of restaurants, bars and public transport connections. These areas also provide straightforward access to Stadio Olimpico.

Home to both AS Roma and SS Lazio, its history, huge capacity and passionate support make it an exciting destination for a football weekend in Rome. While I haven’t visited the stadium yet, it’s definitely on the European Away Trips list.
