Flights from the UK
Dortmund is easy to reach from the UK, with several nearby airports. Dortmund Airport (DTM) is the closest, but has limited UK routes. Most fans fly into Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn. Düsseldorf is around 50 minutes by direct train to Dortmund, with regular services from London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh. Cologne is about 1 hour 15 minutes away and also well connected from across the UK. Budget carriers often fly to both, so check fares on Skyscanner and consider train times when booking.
⭐ Captain’s Tip
Also check flights from Amsterdam, this is how i travelled to Dortmund and prices including train can be cheaper if you want an adventure.
Getting to Signal Iduna Park
The stadium is around 3km south of Dortmund city centre. On matchdays the easiest way is by train to Dortmund Signal Iduna Park station, then it’s a short walk. Trams also run from the Hauptbahnhof towards Westfalenstadion. If you’re flying into Düsseldorf or Cologne direct trains run to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, then it’s a simple onward connection.
🍺Best Pubs.
Before the match, most fans drink around the city center or in the Kreuzviertel district , where you’ll find traditional German pubs serving local beers and match day crowds. Near the stadium, the Strobels Bar is popular, and there’s also plenty of beer stalls around the ground, where you can grab a beer and a bratwurst on the way in.
🍔 Food & Drink
Inside Signal Iduna Park, expect classic German football grub: Bratwurst , Currywurst, pretzels , and pints of Brinkhoff’s beer. Prices are reasonable by stadium standards, and the concourses get busy, so get there early if you can. The atmosphere starts building long before kickoff, so that’s part of the experience.

📸 Best Photo Opportunities
Don’t miss the chance to photograph the famous Yellow Wall, one of football’s most iconic sights. The stadium’s exterior with its distinctive yellow pylons is especially photogenic at dusk. The Westfalenstadion sign, the BVB Fan Shop, and the statues outside the stadium are all great photo ops too.

🏨 Where to Stay
If you’re visiting for a match, stay in Dortmund City Centre near the Hauptbahnhof for easy transport and plenty of bars. The Kreuzviertel district is great for nightlife. If you’re on a budget, look around Bochum or Duisburg for cheaper hotels with fast train links.
Captain’s Recommendation
Book as early as possible for big Bundesliga or Champions League matches as prices rise quickly and hotels sell out fast.

🫡Captains Matchday Memory
I visited Signal Iduna Park around ten years ago for a Europa League match. The moment the Yellow Wall began singing before kick-off confirmed why this stadium has such a legendary reputation. Even years later, it’s one of the best football atmospheres I’ve experienced.
