Flights from the UK

Amsterdam is one of the easiest European football cities to reach from the UK, with direct flights to Amsterdam Schiphol from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, and several other airports. The flight takes around an hour, and with frequent daily services it’s easy to build a weekend trip around an Ajax match or stadium tour.

⭐ Captain’s Tip

Book early morning flights to make the most of your day in Amsterdam. Schiphol is well connected to the city and to the stadium, but allow plenty of time on matchdays as trains can get busy

Getting to The Johan Cruyff Arena

The Johan Cruyff Arena’s about 10 km southeast of Amsterdam city centre. The easiest route is by train or metro to Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station, and from there it is a short walk to the stadium. Trains run directly from Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal, so it’s really straightforward.

Captain’s Tip

I’d aim to arrive early on match day. The area around the stadium has shops, bars, and fan zones that are well worth exploring.

🍺Best Pubs.

The best pre-match pub areas are around Bijlmer Arena Boulevard, which has plenty of bars and restaurants near the stadium. If you’re staying in the city center, O’Reilly’s Irish Pub is popular with traveling supporters, or for something more local, Brouwerij ’t IJ Brewery by the windmill is a great stop before heading out.

⭐ Captain’s Recommendation

If it’s your first time, grab a drink in the city centre, then head to Bijlmer ArenA early. The walk to the ground builds the atmosphere nicely.

🍔 Food & Drink

Inside the Johan Cruyff Arena, you’ll find typical Dutch stadium food such as fries, burgers, snacks and plenty of Heineken. It’s efficient but can get busy, so don’t leave it until the last minute.

Captain’s Recommendation: Try a local bar or cafe in Amsterdam before the match and head to the stadium with plenty of time to soak up the pre-match atmosphere.

📸 Best Photo Opportunities

The Johan Cruyff Arena has loads of great photo spots, especially for first-time visitors. Don’t miss the Johan Cruyff statue, the giant Ajax letters outside the stadium, the Johan Cruyff Arena sign itself, the Ajax Fan Shop, and the stadium exterior at night when it’s lit up.

⭐ Captain’s Tip: I’d say give yourself plenty of time, maybe 90 minutes before kickoff, to walk around and grab your shots.

🏨 Where to Stay

Stay in central Amsterdam if you want to explore and enjoy the nightlife, with easy metro links to the stadium. Budget options are available around Amsterdam Zuid or Bijlmer, which can be a bit cheaper but still convenient on match day.

⭐Captain’s Recommendation: Book early. Prices climb fast on Ajax match weeks.

⭐Captain’s Tip: If you’re doing a weekend, stay near a metro stop for quick and easy travel across the city.
