Flights from the UK

Milan is one of the easiest European football destinations to reach from the UK with direct flights from most major airports. You can fly to Milan, Malpensa, Bergamo or Linate, with typical flight times between 2 and 2 hours 40 minutes, depending on your departure airport. Direct services operate from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh, which makes San Siro an ideal destination for a weekend or even a day trip.

Captain’s tip: Before booking, compare flights to Malpensa, Bergamo and Linate, rather than just searching Milan. Linate is the closest to the city centre, but Bergamo and Malpensa often offer cheaper fares, and both have straightforward transport links into Milan.

Getting to SAN SIRO

San Siro is well connected by metro and bus. If you’re travelling from the city centre or elsewhere in Milan, getting to the stadium is straightforward with several transport options available on matchdays.

🚆 By Metro

The easiest way to reach San Siro is by taking Milan’s Metro Line M5 (the purple line) to San Siro Stadio station, which drops you right by the stadium It’s fast, affordable, and runs frequently on matchdays. From the city centre, just change onto the M5 and follow signs for San Siro Stadio. Give yourself a little extra time before kickoff to soak up the pre-match buzz.

🚌 Matchday Bus

Several buses go near San Siro, including matchday services that stop close to the stadium, but I’d treat the bus as a backup not your main plan. Traffic builds up heavily before and after games. If you do take the bus, check current ATM Milan routes on the day, then aim to arrive early. Honestly, whenever possible, stick with the M5 Metro.

Best Pubs.

Unlike many UK stadiums, San Siro isn’t surrounded by traditional football pubs. Most fans either enjoy a drink in Milan city centre before heading to the match, or grab a beer from one of the bars near the stadium.

🍺 Tenconi Old Pub

Just a short walk from San Siro. It’s a popular meeting place for locals and visiting fans. Good beers, traditional pub atmosphere, great place to start your match day.

🍺 Doppio Malto Sport Pub

Located at the stadium itself. It’s a modern sports bar with food, drinks, and big screens, perfect if you want to stay close to the ground and soak up the atmosphere.

🍺 Baretto 1957

A long-standing match day favourite just outside the stadium, popular with both home and away supporters. A good option for a quick drink or bite to eat.

⭐ Captain’s Recommendation

My pick: Tenconi Old Pub

Enjoy a few drinks in Milan city centre or the Navigli district before heading to the stadium on the Metro and head to Tenconi Old Pub before the match. It’s close enough to soak up the atmosphere without feeling rushed. Then make the short walk to San Siro about an hour before kick-off.

🍔 Food & Drink

Whether you’re after a quick snack before kickoff or a sit down meal after the match, San Siro has plenty of options. Around the stadium you’ll find food kiosks and street vendors serving classic Italian favorites like panini, pizza slices, burgers, hot dogs and freshly made sandwiches. Inside the stadium you’ll find snacks, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages, although the queues can get pretty busy as kickoff approaches. For a wider choice, I’d recommend eating in Milan’s city center before heading to the match. Areas like Navigli, Porta Garibaldi and the city center offer everything from traditional trattorias to modern bars and international cuisine.

⭐ Captain’s Tip

If you’re making a day or weekend trip, enjoy a proper Italian meal in the city before taking the Metro to San Siro. You’ll have more choice, better value, and avoid the pre-match queues. Captain’s tip: Don’t miss the chance to try a freshly made Italian panino or a slice of pizza before the match. Arriving 90 to 120 minutes early gives you time to eat, explore and soak up that big match atmosphere.

📸 Best Photo Opportunities

San Siro is one of Europe’s most photogenic stadiums. Its spiral towers, sweeping tiers, and matchday atmosphere make it an unmissable for football fans and photographers. Don’t miss – The soaring exterior towers for that classic San Siro shot. Inside the Curva Nord and Curva Sud – for a wide angle view of the entire stadium. The tunnel and pitch side tour if it’s available.

Don’t miss:

📍 The Spiral Towers (Exterior)

📍 San Siro Stadio Metro Station Sign

📍 Curva Sud Stand

📍 Curva Nord Stand

📍 Pitchside (Stadium Tour)

📍 Players Tunnel (Stadium Tour)

📍 The San Siro Museum

⭐ Captain’s Tip

Arrive at least 90 minutes before kick-off or book the stadium tour on a non-matchday. You’ll have plenty of time to photograph the iconic spiral towers, explore the museum and capture the stadium before the crowds arrive.

🏨 Where to Stay

Whether you’re visiting San Siro for a match or a stadium tour, Milan has accommodation to suit every budget. I recommend staying in Milan’s city centre around Duomo, Porta Garibaldi or Navigli so you can enjoy the best of Milan and easily reach San Siro on the Metro.

Captain’s Recommendation

Book as early as possible for big Serie A or Champions League matches as prices rise quickly and hotels sell out fast.

⭐ Captain’s Top Tip

🫡 Captain’s Verdict

San Siro is pure football theatre. The spiral towers, the scale of the bowl, the noise from the Curva. It all hits you the moment you arrive. If you’re a football fan, this is a bucket list stadium.
