Weserstadion Guide

.

Weserstadion is the iconic home of SV Werder Bremen, sitting directly beside the River Weser in the heart of Bremen. Opened in 1926, the stadium holds around 42,100 supporters and has been Werder’s home since 1934. Its riverside location, traditional green-and-white identity and long history make it one of Germany’s most distinctive football grounds. The stadium was also modernised between 2008 and 2011, including its distinctive roof and photovoltaic system.

Getting to Weserstadion

✈️ By Plane

Bremen Airport has direct connections with the UK, including London and Manchester, making Bremen a convenient gateway for a football weekend in northern Germany. Flight times from the UK are generally around 1½–2 hours, depending on the departure airport. For the best fares, it’s worth comparing dates and booking early, particularly around popular football weekends.

🏟️ Getting to Weserstadion

🚤 Something different: On matchdays, fans can also travel by boat along the River Weser, arriving at the Weserstadion/Pauliner Marsch dock.

🚋 From Bremen Hauptbahnhof: Take tram line 10 towards Sebaldsbrück and get off at St. Jürgen-Straße. The journey takes around 15 minutes, followed by a short walk to the stadium.

🚋 From Bremen city centre: Tram 3 towards Weserwehr runs directly to Weserstadion, making this the simplest option from the centre.

🎟️ Matchday bonus: A valid ticket for a Werder home match also provides free travel on BSAG and VBN buses and trains to and from the stadium.

🚗 By car: Driving directly to the stadium isn’t recommended on matchdays. The surrounding area is closed to cars from 2½ hours before kick-off, with Park & Ride facilities available instead.

🚌 Park & Ride: Hemelinger Hafen is one of the main options, with shuttle buses taking around 10 minutes to reach the stadium; match-ticket holders can use the service free of charge.

🍺 Best Pubs.

  • 🟢 Eisen Bremen — A legendary football and punk pub in the Viertel. Werder matches are shown live, and it’s a great choice for soaking up the local fan atmosphere before or after a game.
  • 🟢 Taubenschlag — A proper local pub close to Weserstadion on Auf dem Peterswerder. A particularly good choice if you want to be close to the stadium and amongst Werder supporters.
  • Litfass — Right in Das Viertel and known for showing live football, making it a good option if you’re staying in the neighbourhood or can’t get a match ticket.

🫡 Captain’s Recommendation

Eisen gets my vote. For the guide, I’d describe it as the “proper football pub” choice. If you can’t get a Werder ticket, it’s also somewhere I’d recommend trying on matchday to experience the atmosphere with local supporters.

🍔 Food & Drink

  • 🌯 Rollo in Das Viertel: A Bremen speciality and an excellent pre-match option. It’s crispy flatbread filled with spicy meat and fresh ingredients, and the city specifically recommends picking one up in the Viertel on the way to Weserstadion.
  • 🍺 Beck’s: Bremen’s famous local beer is a natural choice while you’re in town, with plenty of bars and beer gardens serving it along the Weser and around the city.
  • 🏟️ Beck’s Ambiente: A café and restaurant immediately beside Weserstadion, offering traditional northern German and modern dishes—handy for a meal before or after the football.
  • 🍴 Balljungs: Just a short distance from Weserstadion, serving modern German-Mediterranean food and showing Bundesliga and Werder matches.
  • 🌊 Schlachte: Bremen’s riverside restaurant and bar area is another good option, particularly if you want food and drinks with views along the Weser.

🫡 Captain’s Recommendation

Go for a Rollo before the match, followed by a Beck’s. It’s probably the most authentic Bremen football experience.

📸 Best Photo Opportunities

  • 🏟️ Weserstadion from the Osterdeich — one of the best classic views, with the stadium and the River Weser together in the frame.
  • 🌊 Utkiek an’n Weser Stadion — a viewpoint on the bend of the Weser offering excellent views of the stadium and river.
  • 🟢 Main stadium exterior — capture the iconic green-and-white façade, floodlights and Werder branding.
  • 🚤 From the river — the stadium’s riverside position gives you the chance for a different perspective, particularly if you use the ferry on matchday.
  • 📸 Matchday approach along the Osterdeich — especially good for capturing the build-up, supporters and the stadium appearing ahead of you.

🫡 Captain’s Tip: I’d make the Osterdeich approach your priority. It gives you more than just a stadium photograph—it captures the River Weser, the surroundings and the atmosphere of arriving at Werder’s home. And when you visit in October, we’ll be able to replace these researched recommendations with your own first-hand photos.

🏨 Where to Stay

  • 🏙️ Bremen Altstadt (Old Town): Best for first-time visitors who want to be close to Bremen’s main sights, restaurants and historic attractions. A good all-round base with easy public transport connections to Weserstadion.
  • 🍺 Das Viertel (Ostertor & Steintor): Best for football fans. This lively neighbourhood has plenty of pubs, bars, cafés and restaurants, while Weserstadion is right on its doorstep. It’s a great choice if you want to experience Bremen’s local atmosphere before and after the match.
  • 🚆 Hauptbahnhof / Bahnhofsvorstadt: A practical choice for a short football weekend, particularly if you’re arriving by train or travelling on to another city. There are plenty of hotels around the station and excellent transport connections.

🫡 Captain’s Recommendation

I’d choose Das Viertel. You’re close enough to Weserstadion to make matchday easy, while having Bremen’s bars and restaurants right outside your door. For a proper football weekend, it gives you the best combination of stadium access, atmosphere and nightlife.

⭐ Captain’s Top Tip

Make the most of Bremen’s football culture beyond the stadium itself. Stay around Das Viertel, grab a traditional Bremen Rollo at Tandour, enjoy a Beck’s, and make your way towards Weserstadion along the Osterdeich. If you manage to secure a Werder ticket, remember that your match ticket also includes local public transport, making getting to and from the stadium nice and simple.

🫡 Captain’s Verdict

Weserstadion looks like an excellent destination for a European football weekend. Its 100-year history, riverside location, passionate Werder Bremen support and traditional football surroundings make it stand out from many modern stadiums. With Bremen being compact and easy to explore, the combination of football, food, beer and the city’s atmosphere makes this a trip I’d highly recommend.
